About CortexCrunch

Honest cognitive tools. Zero paywalls.

CortexCrunch is an independent suite of 28 browser-based cognitive tests, reaction benchmarks, and mental puzzles built on open psychological research paradigms.

Who we are

CortexCrunch is created and maintained by Boum Ltd, an independent digital product and software studio based in the United Kingdom. We are software engineers, web developers, and puzzle enthusiasts with a passion for clean, lightweight browser tools.

We are not medical doctors, neurosurgeons, or clinical healthcare providers. We don't pretend to be. Instead, we build fast, accurate digital implementations of classic, public-domain psychological and cognitive tasks—giving you a straightforward way to test your reaction time, practice working memory, and enjoy sharp mental challenges without commercial friction.

Why we built CortexCrunch

For over two decades, commercial "brain training" apps have promised the world: higher IQs, protection against memory loss, and miraculous cognitive transformations. In reality, independent meta-analyses repeatedly show that playing a game simply makes you better at that specific game—not an all-around genius.

We believe there is real, lasting value in being the platform that tells the truth:

  • 28 Free Cognitive Tests: Covering reaction time, working memory updating, spatial span, mental arithmetic, selective attention, and inhibitory control.
  • No Subscriptions or Paywalls: Every single test is available to everyone, permanently. No credit card trials, no locked levels.
  • No Forced Accounts: You don't need to hand over your email address or personal data. Your performance scores and streak records live right in your browser's local storage.
  • Honest Numbers: We show you raw milliseconds, accuracy percentages, and spans, contextualised against published research distributions rather than inflated "brain age" scores.

Our editorial & research approach

When we write about cognitive science, neuroscience, or study techniques on our blog and science page, our goal is to provide accessible, plain-spoken educational summaries of peer-reviewed literature. We reference established academic research (citing author, year, and published sources) and explicitly explain what the science does and does not support.

We maintain a strict boundary: nothing published on CortexCrunch constitutes medical advice or claims to treat, diagnose, or prevent any cognitive or neurological condition. If you ever have genuine clinical concerns about your memory or health, always consult a qualified medical professional.

Privacy & business model

CortexCrunch is completely free to use. To cover server hosting, domain fees, and ongoing maintenance, we show standard web advertisements through Google AdSense. We do not sell user data, track personal identities across the web, or require tracking cookies to play our games. For more details, please review our Privacy Policy.
